The best ways to buy airline tickets are to understand how airline ticket pricing works and how to get the best possible ticket price. Travelers should always fully research prices before booking a flight.
Online
Airlines set their ticket prices according to the current prices of their competitors; therefore, ticket prices are subject to change. Start searching for airline tickets online at least one month before your trip.
Compare airline ticket prices to online travel companies such as Priceline, Travelocity, or CheapTickets, which provide up-to-the-minute travel packages and deals.

Buy last-minute tickets, also called standby tickets, for about half the price of pre-purchased tickets. Airlines will offer these if they need to fill empty seats. Last-minute tickets may also be purchased through your airline’s e-fare service.
The trade-off, however, is that these special discounted rates are never guaranteed, and they give travelers less flexible travel options than tickets purchased in advance.
Off-season travel
Buy airline tickets for off-season travel to get the best rates. Flying during holidays and peak seasons can leave travelers vulnerable to high ticket prices and long lines. Also, opt to buy airline tickets for travel on weekdays for even lower prices. Read the rest of this entry »

Safety
Air crash scenarios are unpredictable, but experts have learned some things about what may be the safest seats for passengers.
According to Ed Galea, an Australian aviation safety expert who studied hundreds of plane crashes, being seated within seven rows of an exit can help to save lives. It was found that on average people can walk that distance after a crash to get to safety.
Popular Mechanics magazine gathered data from 20 accidents in the United States between 1971 and 2007 and found that the back of the aircraft is safer in crashes. That study found passengers seated in the back of the plane are 40 percent more likely to survive a crash.
Other experts caution that seat location is an uncertain factor and that the best practice is simply to follow the advice of the flight attendants.
Passengers should brace themselves properly, undo their seatbelts when instructed, exit the plane as fast as possible in an orderly manner, and not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Read the rest of this entry »
